Pythagorean Theorem
We interviewed 6 adults about the Pythagorean Theorem
We asked them the following questions:
1. Did you ever talk about the Pythagorean Theorem with mathematics?
2. Do you still remember something from it? If yes, what?
3. Do you think it helps you to know it? Why?
4. Which formula is most of the time used when people talk about the Pythagorean Theorem?
From the interviews we did, we can conclude the following things:
everyone has had the Pythagorean Theorem as a topic in school.
Not everyone can remember the function of the Pythagorean Theorem.
Some people do use the Pythagorean Theorem, but the most people don’t use this in their daily lives, or in their work.
Except one, everyone answered a2+b2=c2.
The answer that was given to question 4, is the easiest way to remember it. But it’s not always true. The formula a2+b2=c2 is only true when a and b are the adjacent edges, and c is the hypotenuse, and when there is a right-angled triangle. The adjacent edges are the edges that are perpendicular to each other. The hypotenuse is the side that is opposite to the adjacent edges. So actually the formula should be adjacent edge2+adjacent edge2=hypotenuse2
Reflection
Things that went well in our research about the Pythagorean Theorem were coming up with an idea, the task division and the preparation. We came up with the idea quite fast and everybody had something to do. The planning and communication were pretty bad, we had to do a lot of things at the last moment and we did not communicate about wether everybody had done their part and things like that.
Comparison
When we looked to the researches of other schools we saw some differences:
- They did more work for the project
- Their research was much longer
- The layouts from the other groups were really nice, in comparison to our lay-out
